Overview
The carbon film resistor round reel is a fixed-value passive component commonly used in electronic circuits to control and limit electrical current flow. Carbon film resistor units are constructed by depositing a thin, pure carbon layer onto a ceramic substrate, then sealed with a protective epoxy coating. This reel-packaged format is ideal for manufacturing environments and component distribution where multiple resistors are needed for assembly or repair applications.
Key Features
- Proven Carbon Film Technology: Thin film of pure carbon deposited on a ceramic carrier to restrict the flow of electric current, delivering stable performance across industrial and commercial applications
- Cost-Effective Solution: Carbon film resistors offer an economical choice for non-critical biasing, LED limiting, and general-purpose circuit designs
- Wide Resistance Range: Typical resistance range spans from 1 Ω to 10 MΩ, covering most standard circuit requirements
- Standard Tolerance: Standard carbon film resistors are ±5%, suitable for general-purpose applications
- High-Temperature Capability: Operating voltages up to 15 kV with a nominal temperature of 350 °C are feasible for carbon film resistors
- Reel Packaging: Round reel format allows for easy dispensing and organized storage in manufacturing and repair environments
Technical Specifications
Carbon film resistors are constructed out of a ceramic carrier with a thin pure carbon film around it. This carbon film functions as the resistive material. The construction process involves hydrocarbon gas, typically methane or benzene passed over the rods at a temperature of around 1000°C. At this temperature the hydrocarbon gas breaks down and a thin film of carbon is deposited onto the rods.
Performance characteristics include typical TCR: -200 to -1000 ppm/°C, meaning resistance decreases slightly as temperature increases. These carbon resistors have a low noise and exhibit excellent environmental stability with proper epoxy protective coating.
