Overview
The Allen-Bradley 1756-LSP is a GuardLogix safety partner processor designed as a co-processor module for the ControlLogix family. Unlike standalone safety controllers, the 1756-LSP pairs with a primary controller to create a redundant, isolated safety channel that meets SIL 3 and Performance Level (e) certification requirements. It operates within the CompactFlash-based 1756 chassis architecture and provides dedicated, deterministic safety-function execution.
Key Features
- Redundant safety co-processor providing isolated second channel for safety-related functions
- SIL 3 / Performance Level (e) certified for machinery safety and process control applications
- 250 connection capacity with dedicated safety memory (1 MB or 3.75 MB depending on paired primary controller)
- Compact single-slot module design; requires installation immediately adjacent to primary controller
- CompactFlash nonvolatile memory with built-in battery backup for clock and runtime data
- RS-232 communication port; integrated LED status indicators for real-time monitoring

Typical Applications
- Industrial machinery safety systems (presses, assembly lines, conveyor interlocks)
- Food and beverage processing with safety interlocks and emergency stops
- Automotive manufacturing requiring redundant safety-function execution
- Packaging machinery with coordinated guarding and fault tolerance
- Process control systems requiring dual-channel safety logic
Compatibility & Replacements
The 1756-LSP is compatible with the 1756-L61S, 1756-L62S, and 1756-L63S primary GuardLogix controllers. It must be installed in the slot immediately adjacent (to the right) to the primary controller to meet SIL 3 requirements. The module pair occupies two consecutive chassis slots. Programming is performed via Rockwell Automation RSLogix 5000 (Studio 5000). Note: The 1756-LSP was discontinued by Rockwell Automation effective June 1, 2017. The 1756-L7SP is the functional replacement for new system designs; however, the 1756-LSP remains in-service and supported for legacy systems.
