Overview
The Allen-Bradley 1747-SN Series B is a Remote I/O (RIO) Scanner module designed for the SLC 500 PLC family. The 1747-SN facilitates communication between an SLC processor (SLC 5/02 or later) and remotely located 1746 I/O chassis, HMIs, and other RIO-compatible Allen-Bradley control devices. Communication occurs over twisted-pair cable in a daisy-chain topology, with the scanner serving as the master device while connecting to multiple slave adapter units across distances up to 3,048 meters (10,000 feet).
Key Features
- Master-slave RIO link architecture supports up to 16 devices in normal mode or 32 devices in complementary mode
- Long-distance remote communication: 3,048 meters (10,000 feet) maximum cable span
- Compatible with any standard RIO adapter device and PanelView series terminals
- Configurable to transfer discrete and block transfer data; Series B or later supports up to 64 words of block transfer data
- Multiple baud rate support (57.6, 115.2, 230.4 kbaud) via DIP switch configuration
- Integrates into any SLC chassis slot except slot 0; backplane-mounted connector

Typical Applications
The 1747-SN Remote I/O Scanner is ideal for:
- Distributed I/O control in large manufacturing facilities where field devices are remote from the main SLC processor
- Machine-to-machine networks requiring centralized SLC 500 supervision with decentralized I/O control
- Long-distance operator interface integration with PanelView terminals and HMI systems over RIO links
- Complex motion control and process automation systems requiring block transfer communication and flexible data mapping
- System upgrades and retrofits to existing SLC 500 installations requiring expanded remote I/O capability
Compatibility & Replacements
Compatible With
- SLC 5/02, 5/03, 5/04, 5/05 processors
- 1746 series I/O chassis (master-slave configuration)
- All standard RIO adapter devices (1746-AENT, 1746-A13, and equivalent)
- PanelView series operator interfaces and terminals
- Allen-Bradley Remote I/O (RIO) network topology
- RSLogix 500 programming software (G-file configuration)
Replaces / Drop-In Replacement For
The 1747-SN Series B directly replaces earlier versions of the 1747-SN (Series A and earlier). Series B units offer enhanced block transfer capability (up to 64 words) compared to earlier revisions.
