Overview
The GE SPM-PF synchronous motor protection relay is a microprocessor-based control system designed for protection and regulation of synchronous motors. The SPM controls starting, synchronizing, and protection of collector-ring or brushless type synchronous motors. The SPM-PF variant includes an integrated power factor (PF) regulation option for SCR-type excitation systems, making it ideal for critical industrial motor applications requiring closed-loop field control.
Key Features
- Backlit 32 character LCD display for setpoints, actual values and status
- Stall protection, incomplete sequence trip, power factor (pull-out) trip with auto resynchronizing, loss of DC field current/voltage trip, field winding overtemperature trip, and optional power factor regulation
- Control of an SCR type excitation system by means of an analog output to maintain power factor (PF regulation)
- Two-wire RS485 port with capability to daisy-chain up to 32 SPMs together on a communication channel
- Programmable auto-scan sequence for unattended operation
- Complete system check prior to starting the motor

Replaces / Drop-In Replacement For
This SPM Standard Starting and Protection Relay is a legacy product offering not currently being manufactured. Direct replacement models should be verified with GE technical support. The SPM-PF is the power-factor regulation variant; standard SPM units without the -PF suffix do not include this feature.
Works With
- GE EnerVista Suite (monitoring, maintenance, and HMI integration tools)
- RS485 serial communication for daisy-chained relay networks
- SCR proportional exciters for closed-loop power factor regulation
- Standard 5A current transformers for phase current sensing
- External voltage divider networks (VDN) for voltage sensing on synchronous machines
