Overview
The Parker 0443-8473 Clipper split seal is a factory-split rotary shaft seal engineered for quick, tool-free installation over rotating shafts. This permits installation over the side of a shaft, rather than over the end, and often can save dismantling the equipment in order to replace the existing rotary shaft seal. The 3QTR18 designation identifies this unit’s size and profile configuration, making it suitable for replacement in existing equipment without extended downtime.
Key Features
- Factory-Split Design: Split Clipper Oil Seals have the same superior characteristics as solid general purpose Clipper Oil Seals, but are factory-split at one place in the circumference, permitting installation over the side of a shaft.
- RUP/R Profile: RUP and RPD profiles are general purpose spring loaded with a single lip and are widely used as replacement seals because they provide superior bearing protection.
- Durable Construction: The tough, dense outer case and a soft, flexible lip are concentrically molded as a single unit, with the nonmetallic outer case forming a leak-free, press fit in the housing.
- Stainless Steel Spring: Stainless steel coil garter spring helps keep split junction tight and compensates for minor shaft irregularities.
- Minimal Maintenance: Easy installation – no special tools required and no backup plates required.
- Corrosion Resistance: Corrosion-resistant case reduces bore surface seizing.
Technical Specifications
The Parker 0443-8473 split seal provides the following performance parameters:
- Shaft Surface Speed: Up to 2,000 fpm (10.2 m/s).
- Operating Temperature Range (NBR): -20°F to +250°F.
- Operating Temperature Range (FKM): -40°F to +400°F.
- Maximum Pressure: 0 psi (non-pressurized applications).
- Lip Design: Flat lip contact design compensates for minor split-end misalignment.
Typical Applications
Split Clipper Oil Seals are designed for applications such as motors, gearboxes, pumps, fans, industrial rolls, and custom equipment, where the same is not readily able to be disassembled due to time constraints. The Parker 0443-8473 is particularly valuable in retrofit and emergency seal replacement scenarios where Split Clipper Oil Seals can be used to minimize unscheduled downtime, specifically where equipment cannot be uncoupled, and will provide long and efficient service until major or scheduled machine overhaul permits convenient installation of a regular non-split seal.
