Overview
The Allen-Bradley 1794-L34 is a FlexLogix processor unit designed for the FLEX I/O modular control system. This controller is designed for use with the FLEX I/O modular system and includes 512 KB of user memory, operating from a 24 VDC external power supply, making it suitable for distributed or mid-sized control applications. The 1794-L34 FlexLogix controller is no longer in production and has been declared obsolete by Rockwell Automation.
Key Features
- 512KB User Memory: The controller comes with 512 KB of user memory, which is used for storing logic, data, and system configuration, suitable for small to medium control applications with moderate logic complexity.
- 24VDC Power Supply: Powered by 24 VDC within a range of 19.2–31.2 VDC, the controller supports SELV-compliant power sources.
- RS-232 Serial Communication: Its embedded serial port supports ASCII and DF1 protocols, enabling communication with barcode readers, HMIs, SCADA systems, and other serial devices.
- Multi-Network Capability: Additional networking functionality is available through 1788-series communication adapters, which allow the controller to operate on Ethernet/IP, ControlNet, and DeviceNet networks.
- Eight Task Support: It supports up to eight tasks, including event tasks, and provides deterministic performance for time-sensitive applications.
- Industrial Environmental Tolerance: With wide environmental tolerance, including operation from 0–60 °C, high shock/vibration ratings, and 5–95% non-condensing humidity support, the 1794-L34 is designed for industrial reliability.
Technical Specifications
- I/O Connectivity: The controller connects to FLEX I/O modules using the FlexBus interface, with the maximum number of I/O depending on the backplane current limit (653 mA) and power supply capacity.
- Power Consumption: Operates with 20.4 Watts at 24 Volts DC at maximum power dissipation and 653mA at 5.1 Volts DC at maximum FlexBus current output.
- Communication Slots: One RS-232 serial port for device communication and two slots for 1788 communication cards, enabling multi-network connectivity.
- Mounting: Installation is supported on steel 35 mm DIN rail or via panel mounting.
- Programming: The 1794-L34 is programmed using RSLogix 5000 software, which supports tag-based programming, structured routines, and motion instructions, compatible with FlexLogix architecture.
Typical Applications
Typical applications include distributed control systems, process automation, and machine-level control. The 1794-L34 is well-suited for facility-level control in manufacturing, material handling, bottling lines, and other mid-complexity industrial processes where modular expandability is required.
Compatibility & Replacements
The 1794-L34 is part of Rockwell Automation’s legacy FLEX I/O family and is compatible with all standard FLEX I/O I/O modules and 1788-series communication adapters. Users are encouraged to migrate to CompactLogix or ControlLogix platforms for new projects requiring extended support and modern capabilities. Replacement options include the CompactLogix 1768 series or ControlLogix 1756 series processors, depending on application requirements.
