Overview
The Allen-Bradley 1756-LSP is a GuardLogix Safety Partner co-processor module designed for the 1756 ControlLogix family. It serves as a redundant safety channel that is isolated for the system’s safety-related functions. This module implements safety functions compliant up to SIL 3 and Performance Level (e) applications. Unlike standalone safety controllers, the 1756-LSP integrates seamlessly into existing ControlLogix architectures, allowing standard and safety logic to coexist within a single control system.
Key Features
- Integrated Safety Architecture: Enables the controller assembly to comply up to SIL 3 rating without requiring a separate safety controller
- Redundant Co-Processor Design: Functions as a co-processor, enabling a dedicated and isolated processor for safety functions
- Compatible Primary Controllers: Works with 1756-L61S, 1756-L62S, and 1756-L63S primary controllers
- Scaled Safety Memory: Safety memory is 1MB with L61S/L62S or 3.75 MB with L63S
- High Connection Count: Handles 250 controller connections
- RS-232 Serial Interface: Built-in serial port for device communication and diagnostics

Typical Applications
The 1756-LSP is best suited for PLE safety applications and SIL 3 safety applications, used as the safety partner device within a complete GuardLogix system where it operates alongside a primary GuardLogix controller module. Common uses include machinery emergency stop logic, process interlocks, personnel safety gates, and safety-rated motion control. It is widely deployed in food processing, automotive assembly, packaging, and chemical manufacturing where redundant safety control is mandated by risk assessment.
Compatibility & Replacements
The 1756-LSP is compatible with 1756-L61S, 1756-L62S, and 1756-L63S primary controllers. As of June 1, 2017, the product is discontinued with the functional replacement being the 1756-L7SP. Integrates with all 1756 I/O modules (digital input/output, analog, specialty). Programming is performed in Studio 5000 Logix Designer with SafetyLogix for the safety task. The module ships with a 1756-BA2 lithium battery that backs up CompactFlash memory in case of power failure and can be replaced when depleted.
