Overview

The Allen-Bradley 1747-SN Series B is a Remote I/O (RIO) scanner module designed for the SLC 500 control system family. It enables high-speed communication between an SLC processor and remotely located I/O chassis (1746 series) and other RIO-compatible devices, including HMIs, PanelView displays, and automation control equipment. The Series B revision provides extended node capability and reliable performance across industrial environments, making it ideal for applications requiring distributed I/O architecture across large facilities.

Key Features

  • RIO Protocol Master: Facilitates communication between SLC processor and remotely located 1746 I/O chassis; serves as the master (scanner) connecting to multiple slaves (adapters)
  • Extended Communication Range: Maximum distance for remote communication is 3,048m (10,000 ft.) using Belden 9463 twisted-pair cable
  • Multiple Device Support: Can connect up to 16 devices in normal mode or 32 devices in complementary mode
  • Flexible Baud Rate Configuration: Supports different baud rates of 57.6, 115.2, or 230.4 kbaud with DIP switch selection
  • LED Diagnostics: Front section has LED indicators to show normal communication and fault status updates
  • Low Power Draw: Uses a backplane current load of 600mA at 5V DC

Technical Specifications

  • Processor Compatibility: Compatible with SLC 502, 503, 504, and 505 processors
  • I/O Data Capacity: Transfers maximum of 4 logical racks (32 input and 32 output image words) of discrete remote I/O data into SLC input and output image files
  • Backplane Current (5V DC): 600 mA
  • Backplane Current (24V DC): 90 mA
  • Maximum Thermal Dissipation: 4.5 Watts
  • Operating Temperature Range: 0–60°C
  • Communication Port: One (1) Remote I/O communication port used to communicate with RIO adapters
  • Recommended Cable: Compatible with Belden 9463 cable
  • Configuration Method: G-file required; DIP switch baud rate selection
  • Mounting: Can be installed in any slot of the SLC chassis other than Slot 0

Typical Applications

The 1747-SN is widely used in:

  • Distributed control systems requiring remote I/O monitoring and command across large facilities (warehouses, manufacturing plants, utilities)
  • Printing and graphic arts equipment networks where applications require distributed controllers for I/O communications along with a supervisory controller or connections between I/O adapters and controllers
  • Remote PanelView and HMI integration for centralized process visualization and control
  • Multi-location I/O strategies where daisy-chained RIO adapters simplify field wiring and reduce installation costs
  • Legacy SLC 500 system upgrades and expansions requiring high-speed remote communication

Compatibility & Replacements

Compatible With

  • SLC 500 processors (SLC 5/02 through SLC 5/05)
  • 1746 remote I/O chassis (all series)
  • Allen-Bradley RIO adapter modules and devices
  • PanelView operator terminals and displays
  • RSLogix 500 programming software
  • Allen-Bradley Remote I/O (RIO) Link network protocol

Replaces / Drop-In Replacement For
