Overview
The Allen-Bradley 1786-RPFM is a ControlNet modular repeater designed for medium-distance fiber optic installations. This module optically isolates and extends the physical length of ControlNet networks, converting copper coaxial cable to fiber media with support for point-to-point, star, and ring topologies. With industry-proven reliability, the 1786-RPFM is the preferred choice for integrators who need ground isolation and noise immunity in electrically harsh environments.
Key Features
- Extends ControlNet segments up to 3000 meters (9,843 feet) using fiber optic cable
- Dual fiber optic channels with DIN rail and direct panel mounting flexibility
- Supports horizontal and vertical mounting orientations
- Converts ControlNet coax medium to 62.5/125 µm multimode (OM1) fiber
- Provides ground isolation between nodes and superior noise immunity versus copper media
- Compatible with 1786-RPA repeater adapter; up to four 1786-RPFM modules per adapter
- Integrated status indicator for fault detection and error monitoring

Typical Applications
The 1786-RPFM is ideal for extending ControlNet network reach across industrial facilities with long cable runs, environments with high electrical noise levels, or applications requiring optical isolation. Common uses include:
- Star and ring topology networks requiring multiple direction connections from a single point
- Point-to-point and trunk line configurations needing segment extension
- Hazardous areas or locations with known electromagnetic interference (EMI)
- Food processing, automotive, and chemical manufacturing where signal integrity is critical
- Facilities crossing multiple zones requiring isolation between networked devices
Compatibility & Replacements
The 1786-RPFM works exclusively with the Allen-Bradley 1786-RPA ControlNet Repeater Adapter module. A single 1786-RPA can support up to four 1786-RPFM fiber modules, and fiber repeater types may be mixed within a single ControlNet network. Configuration and validation are performed using Allen-Bradley’s RSnetWorx software. Note: This product was discontinued effective December 30, 2025, by Rockwell Automation; engineering replacements may be available through your distributor.
