Overview
The Allen-Bradley 160-DN2 DeviceNet Communication Module is an interface module for integrating Bulletin 160 Smart Speed Controllers with DeviceNet networks. This is a used unit designed to provide industrial-grade communication between 160 SSC variable frequency drives and master controllers, HMIs, and SCADA systems.
Key Features
- Selectable DeviceNet communication rates: 125, 250, or 500 kbps
- Configurable DIP switches for node address (0–63) and baud rate selection
- LED status indicators: READY, FAULT, and COMM for diagnostic feedback
- Direct mounting via front-panel expansion port on 160 series drives
- Supports change-of-state (COS), cyclic, and slave-polled messaging modes
- Compact form factor (67.5 × 70 × 45.4 mm)

Typical Applications
The 160-DN2 is commonly deployed in variable frequency drive systems requiring real-time communication with:
- Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for operator control and monitoring
- SCADA systems for plant-wide data acquisition and visualization
- Programming workstations for drive configuration and firmware updates
- Distributed industrial automation networks integrating multiple drive types
- Legacy systems requiring DeviceNet protocol support for backward compatibility
Compatibility & Replacements
Compatible With
- Bulletin 160 SSC Variable Frequency AC Drives (Series A, B, C)
- ControlLogix and CompactLogix Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs)
- PLC-5 controllers via 1771-SDN gateway
- SLC 500 controllers via 1747-SDN gateway
- Third-party DeviceNet devices: gateways, protocol converters, vision systems
- Any DeviceNet-capable master or visualization software (RSNetWorx for DeviceNet, etc.)
Replaces / Drop-In Replacement For
The 160-DN2 directly replaces the older 160-DN1 DeviceNet communication module on Bulletin 160 AC drives. Users upgrading from 160-DN1 must generate a new EDS file and remap the module to the network.
Works With
- RSNetWorx for DeviceNet (configuration and commissioning tool)
- DeviceNet Manager software
- Studio 5000 Logix Designer (via ControlLogix PACs)
- RSLogix 5 / RSLogix 500 (via 1771-SDN and 1747-SDN)
- DeviceNet Communication Protocol
- Electronic Data Sheets (EDS files) for custom parameter assembly mapping
