Overview
The Allen-Bradley 1747-L531 is a modular SLC 5/03 processor unit from the SLC 500 series, engineered for mid-range industrial control and distributed automation architectures. Operating on 5V DC and 24V DC backplane power, it delivers 8K words of battery-backed RAM with flash EEPROM backup, enabling stable program retention and data integrity in mission-critical environments. This processor remains a dependable choice for legacy system maintenance, long-term production line support, and applications requiring RSLogix 500 programming continuity.
Key Features
- 8KB battery-backed RAM with EEPROM backup for program and data retention
- Supports up to 4,096 discrete inputs and 4,096 discrete outputs with 180 analog I/O points
- Dual communication channels: Channel 0 for DF1/ASCII/DH-485 and Channel 1 dedicated to DH-485 networking
- Multi-protocol support including ControlNet, DeviceNet, Modbus RTU, and Data Highway Plus (DH+)
- Three-position key switch (PROGRAM, RUN, REMOTE) for operational control
- Memory expansion capability to 64K via Flash EPROM (1747-M13 module with 1747-M15 adapter)
- Integrated 30-minute hold-up time via capacitor if battery is disconnected; battery life approximately 2 years with LED indicator

Compatibility & Replacements
The 1747-L531 is part of the SLC 5/03 processor family and can be used as a drop-in replacement for earlier revisions (Series A through D) in existing SLC 500 installations. Equivalent models in the same family include the 1747-L532 (16K memory) and 1747-L542 (32K memory); the L531 offers the lowest memory configuration and is ideal for applications that do not require expanded capacity. Expansion modules 1747-M13 (Flash EPROM) and 1747-M15 (adapter socket) support memory upgrades up to 64K. Remote I/O scanning is achieved via 1747-SN scanner modules, and DeviceNet control is available through 1747-SDN modules. The processor is programmed exclusively with RSLogix 500 and is compatible with all standard SLC 500 I/O and communication modules.
